2-day course Introduction Hydrography

Found myself between many participants from the maritime offshore industry and wondered what brought them to this course since they deal a lot with hydrographical issues. The answer was revealed pretty quick after the starting of the course: everyone was dealing with either the equipment of, or dealing with the Hydrographer professionally without having a clear view what this person actually is doing or why he holds up projects by long periods of calibration.

The course is revealing the tasks and the procedures a Hydrographer is performing in order to make the outcome of his surveys reliable. Positioning instruments, Geodetic matters, calibrations, sensors and dataprocessing, it’s all there. You seriously get curious in more specific details and hydrographical solutions but therefore you need an extensive course.

2-day course Introduction Hydrography

The Gasunie requested Skilltrade to provide an Introdcution Hydrography course in order to present more general information about the field of Hydrography. The course was well attended by a group with mixed backgrounds ranging from Acad personnel, Project Engineers, Accountants and Project Managers. The two-day course took place in Deventer and began with an introduction to survey principles and moved on to a discussion of the various survey equipment & systems, different methods of data collection, processing and charting. The course closed with a plenary discussion of the material and issues presented during the course. Gasunie was pleased with the interaction during the course, the available material and how the course was presented.

1st class International - Hydrographic Surveyor Class "B" course - a students point of view

I was a student on the first course run in early 2007 and have found what I learnt to be of great use in my subsequent work. The subjects covered range from basic surveying skills and information such as geodesy and geodetics to the types of jobs you may be involved with as a surveyor. This included dredging, drilling, offshore construction and inshore/offshore surveying. The course went into detail on the equipment that you would be using including GPS, MBES, SSS, SBP and the calibrations and interfacing needed to get your survey set up working. Also covered were log keeping, DPR’s and final report writing.

The teaching on the course was of a very high standard with different practicals carried out over the duration of the course. There were 1 or 2 exams each week on the various modules that we covered and at the end of the course we were given a project briefing which was to map part of the Port of Rotterdam Harbour. We had to choose the equipment required, plan the project, mobilize the vessel and produce a final report which tied in everything covered on the course.

Overall it was a very enjoyable course with good teaching and excellent facilities. I would recommend this for anyone thinking of entering the survey industry.

10th April 2007 - 1st Class International - Hydrographic Survey course completed

Congratulations to the students of the first class international of the Hydrographic Survey course Class -B- according to the IHO / FIG / ICA guidelines.

Course completed as far as the theory is concerned. All students passed their exams and now they will start their 4week practical period with their respective companies: DEEP, VanOord and Geo Century. In May they will return to the STC at which time their practical experience will be discussed. From May onwards the students will continue with their practical experience in line with IHO recommendations and Skilltrade/STC course program.

Skilltrade / STC believe that hydrographic surveyors must posses both education and experience to carry out their work effectively. A period of varied field experience in hydrographic surveying is necessary to reach the minimum level of competence and active participation in precise position, tidal measurements, bathymetric and sonar measurements, land surveys and data management. Skilltrade / STC has therefore issued each student with a logbook, in line with IMCA guidelines.

Each student will send to the course coordinator, on a regular basis, his progress, experience, weeklog, activity log, task log and project & software log witnessed and signed of by a competent person. (party chief, project leader, senior surveyor or offshore project manager). Skilltrade / STC will, for 2years, keep track of the students progress and in case sufficient experience has been demonstrated, the official class -B- diploma can be issued

5-day Offshore Construction Surveyor course (SK-OFF)

The course satisfied the needs and gave much insight and relevance to our required disciplines. The course was very much clear and understandable. Provided information and material is more than enough.

The 5-day course covers a lot of subjects, but personally I feel that a bit more attention could have been given to software and practice. Not sure but that would probably mean that the course need to be extended.

I participated in the offshore construction surveyor course because of my work offshore and that I have never studied these subjects. The course was for me a real discovery. That is why I found this course a must for everyone.

We really appreciated the 3D modeling to gain more inside and knowledge for data QC. The presentation of software was good and easy to understand.

It was good to participate in this course, which I suggest to run bi-yearly as technology is growing fast.

The course duration is good, but with more practice and equipment the course could easily be extended to 10 days.

My most appreciated subject was the presentation of Survey methods, processing and QC. Very interesting and useful.
