ABOUT THE COURSE

This course introduces the fundamentals and practical applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within hydrographic, offshore and coastal surveying contexts. Participants learn how spatial data is managed, visualised, analysed and integrated into survey workflows. The training covers mapping techniques, coordinate systems, data layers, spatial analysis, and how GIS supports survey planning, execution and reporting. By the end of the course, participants will be able to use GIS tools to enhance decision‑making in hydrographic and marine survey operations.

  • Principles of data management and overview of available data & metadata
  • Data quality assessment and control: field measurements and laboratory procedures
  • Drafting conceptual designs for virtual data infrastructures
  • Metadata formats: creation, submission, and import
  • Central metadata databases, remote access techniques, and Common Data Index (CDI)
  • Operation and maintenance of virtual data & information infrastructures
  • Implementation of automatic or semi-automatic data updates and XML standards
  • Integration of local data sources with virtual infrastructures for data accessibility

Prerequisites

Basic understanding of survey workflows and familiarity with European/IOC data management guidelines or marine/oceanographic data systems is recommended.
