ABOUT THE COURSE

This course provides a solid understanding of how positions, heights, and directions are defined and calculated in hydrographic and geospatial surveying. Participants are introduced to the fundamental principles of geodesy -the science of measuring and representing the Earth- and learn how coordinate systems, projections, and vertical datums are established. The course also explains how different Earth models influence positional accuracy, both in theory and in practical survey applications.

Earth’s shape and reference models: geoids and ellipsoids
Coordinate systems, units, and geodetic datums
National mapping systems and grid projections
Plate tectonics and their impact on positioning
Datum transformations and implications for surveying

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of geodesy or completion of the Skilltrade Introduction to Hydrography course is recommended. Participants should also have a working understanding of mathematical techniques.
