Motion, Timing & Reference

Next opportunity

7 - 9 April 2026

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course delivers insight into the key principles of motion, attitude, timing and reference systems as applied in hydrographic survey operations. Participants will explore how motion and direction sensors function, including motion reference units, inertial navigation systems, gyro compasses and Doppler logs, as well as the importance of time synchronisation, latency, update frequency and survey system timing. A basic introduction to geodetic reference systems is also included to help understand the constraints and possibilities when calculating position and direction in survey techniques.

Contents

  • Motion and reference systems: motion, attitude, and direction in coordinate systems
  • Motion Reference Units (MRU): rotation and acceleration sensors (MEMS, fibre-optic gyros)
  • Direction reference systems: gyro and magnetic compasses, construction, calibration, and use
  • Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) and GNSS-based motion solutions
  • Speed measurement: speed through water vs. speed over ground, Doppler logs, and ADCPs
  • Timing fundamentals: time concepts and systems, latency, synchronization, and update frequency
  • Time synchronization methods: 1PPS signals and common survey synchronization sourcesGeodetic fundamentals that cover the importance of geodetic settings in surveypractice.
