Underwater Acoustics

Next opportunity

1 - 2 April 2026

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course provides a solid foundation in the principles of underwater acoustics and their application in hydrographic surveying. Participants learn how sound behaves and propagates underwater, how it interacts with different media, and how it is used in acoustic measurement and positioning systems. The training covers sound generation and reception, signal propagation, reflection, and attenuation, as well as the characteristics and operation of key acoustic systems. By the end of the course, participants will understand how underwater sound supports accurate data acquisition, navigation, and communication.

Contents

  • Fundamentals of sound and acoustic parameters
  • Interaction with the medium: Sound velocity, diffraction, weakening and interference
  • Transducers and principles of sound generation and reception
  • Sound in acquisition systems: Echo sounder, Sub Bottom Profilers, Side Scan Sonar, Sector Scan Sonar, ADCP
  • Sound at positioning: LBL, USBL, Doppler sonar
  • Other systems: communication, acoustic camera, sound velocity meter
