Introduction to Geophysical & Geotechnical Survey

 

This course introduces Geophysical Survey methods, measurement principles, and Marine Archaeology methods which are currently used by UNESCO organizations. Relevant technical terminology is explained to offer candidates a working knowledge of survey activities.

Target group

The course provides a basic knowledge for individuals who frequently work in a team of people involved in hydrographic recording and processing software. The course is also intended for officials who work together with hydrographic surveyors. 

 

Training prerequisites 

No special preliminary training is required for participating in this course.

1. Introduction to Geology

2. Introduction to Geophysical Survey 9 & 10 July - Underwater Imaging & feature Detection, Side Scan Sonar

  • Underwater Imaging & Feature Detection: Side Scan Sonar - 2 times 3 hours. Dates: 9 & 10 July 2025. This module offers the student the practical knowledge required to use the system in an appropriate way, and to value the data produced by the system. The theoretical background is discussed as well as the practical interpretation of the data. In addition to this, the use of the system is dealt with in detail. Examples of SSS images are used for recognizing all features in the side scan sonar Image.
    • Underwater acoustics, sound sources sound velocity
    • Side Scan Sonar systems basic overview
    • SSS theory
    • SSS interpretation
    • SSS Installation and calibration
    • Survey preparation, setting up, specifications and planning
    • Practical use, launch, adjustment height, position stability of the tow fish
    • Interpretation samples 
  • Underwater Imaging & Feature Detection: Magnetometer -  3 hours 
  • Underwater Imaging & Feature Detection: Sub Bottom profiler -  3 hours
