Target group
This course is intended for people who work directly or indirectly with hydrographic surveys at which acoustic systems are used.
Prerequisite training No special is training required prior to taking this course.
Contents
This course provides a clearer insight into underwater acoustics in relation to hydrographic measurements. The main purpose of the course is to gain an insight into the (proper) working of acoustic systems. The main topics are sound, interaction between sound and medium, generating and receiving sound and applications of sound. Furthermore, further consideration will be given to the specific characteristics of various acoustic systems for gathering data as well as for positioning.
Training Subjects
Sound parameters
Interaction with the medium: Sound velocity, diffraction, weakening and interference
Generating and receiving sound: Transducers
Sound in acquisition systems: Echo sounder, Sub Bottom Profilers, Side Scan Sonar, Sector Scan Sonar, ADCP
Sound at positioning: LBL, USBL, Doppler sonar
Other systems: communication, acoustic camera, sound velocity meter
